To promote biodiversity, the Caterpillar Foundation has financed two reforestation projects of the “myreforest” initiative in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The non-profit company organizes various reforestation projects in Germany with the aim of preserving and protecting forests.<\/p>\n

Starting from December 2022, several thousand tree seedlings were planted in the Palatinate Forest, south of Carlsberg, for the “Carlsberg I” reforestation project, creating new habitats for native wildlife and insects. The objective of the first “myreforest” reforestation project was to renature a monoculture area in the Palatinate Forest.<\/p>\n

Due to the climate-related drought and pests such as the bark beetle, the trees in the area were severely damaged. More than 2 ha of woodland were reforested by means of clump planting (parts of the area). A single clump has a diameter of 5 to 7 m, and the next clump is planted about 12 m away. In this way, it is ensured that the young shoots have ideal growing conditions. Moreover, plastic covers are attached in order to protect the young plants from damage caused by wild animals.<\/p>\n

Resilient regional tree species, such as oaks, maples, wild cherries, chestnuts, and small-leaved lime trees, were used for the reforestation measures. The young trees create a habitat for native insects and wild animals and thus have a positive effect on the biodiversity in the area.<\/p>\n

The second reforestation project, “Carlsberg II”, was launched in January 2024. By March 2024, two treeless areas in the Gerolsheim forest near Carlsberg were reforested. For the second project, the Caterpillar Foundation donated 2,800 trees, which were successively planted in the area by the volunteers. As a result, more than 1 ha of depleted area in the region has been reforested, creating new habitats for insects and wildlife.<\/p>\n
