Mannheim, June 27, 2017
In the context of the IHK initiative “Energy Reform and Climate Protection”, three young apprentices of Caterpillar Energy Solutions participated in the qualification as Energy Scouts. Apart from several workshop modules such as “Introduction to Energy Efficiency” and “Use of Measurement Equipment”, an energy efficiency project constitutes a key element of the qualification measure. The planning and rollout of this environmental protection project takes place in cooperation with the individual training companies.
Business administration apprentices Marie and Elisabeth and mechatronics apprentice Nicolas thus examined the energy consumption of their training company Caterpillar Energy Solutions. The objective of the three enthusiastic apprentices was to discover energy saving potential at the production site for gas engines in Mannheim.

The three apprentices concentrated on examining the compressed air systems at the production facilities of the Mannheim site. For this, the ambitious apprentices inspected seven production halls of the gas engine manufacturer and found a total of 14 compressed air leaks that can now be repaired by the energy management team in Mannheim.
The elimination of the leakage saves about €300 to €500 a year. With their project, the Energy Scouts have gained valuable additional knowledge in the field of energetic optimization and have made a significant contribution to protect the environment. Moreover, they have helped to cut current production costs.

Energy Scouts – Attractive Qualification Measure on the Subject of Climate Protection and Energy Reform for Apprentices
All training professions may participate in the qualification as Energy Scout. No particular specialization is required. At Caterpillar Energy Solutions, both administrative and technical apprentices participated in the energy and environment project with a focus on “energy efficiency”. All three apprentices are in their first year of training. By participating in the climate protection initiative, they have gained a valuable additional qualification that goes beyond the subject scope of their actual training professions.
The qualification measure “Energy Scouts” is part of the “Energy Reform and Climate Protection” initiative, a joint project of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs (BMWi), the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), and the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH).
Energy Efficiency in the Own Company: A Matter of Course
Caterpillar Energy Solutions is an expert for eco-friendly, efficiency energy generation. “We want our apprentices to identify with the corporate philosophy. Thus, the management has supported the qualification measure and is proud of the commitment of our apprentices”, says Managing Director Peter Körner. “To us, examining the question how energy can be used effectively and where energy can be saved in our own company is a matter of course.”
For this reason, Caterpillar Energy Solutions supports the energy efficiency initiative of IHK Rhine-Neckar, helping its apprentices to obtain additional qualifications and applying the skills gained.
