“The Gift of Power”: Under this motto, Caterpillar Inc. recently celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Cat 3500 diesel engine at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City. At the anniversary, the parent company of Caterpillar Energy Solutions announced that a genset of the 3500 platform is currently being installed at a hospital of the St. Luke’s Foundation in Haiti. Reliable power supply is a rare commodity on the Caribbean island that has been repeatedly hit by hurricanes and earthquakes. Therefore, the installation of the donated diesel genset is a major step for the hospital.

During the announcement of this news, Dr. Nathalie Colas, the Medical Director of the St. Luke’s Foundation, was also present. She explained the key advantages that a reliable power supply would deliver to the hospital and to the St. Luke’s Foundation in general. As the aid organization mainly takes care of the weaker and more vulnerable parts of the population, the power and potential of the Cat genset come in where the need is greatest.

Caterpillar Actively Combats Gender Imbalance

In Haiti, girls and women are among the weakest and most vulnerable members of the communities, as the gender imbalance is often deeply rooted in society. As a result, they are often affected by the lack of reliable energy to a disproportionately high degree, and this ultimately impacts the entire population. Under the motto “The Gift of Power”, Caterpillar wants to draw attention to the gender imbalance and make it easier for girls and women to gain access to energy. “We wanted to combine the sustainable strength of one of our most powerful engines with another large source of sustainable strength and power in a community: women”, explained Michele Sullivan, President of the Caterpillar Foundation.

Sustainable and Effective Development Collaboration – the Caterpillar Foundation

In its global work, the Caterpillar Foundation focuses on effectively eliminating the root causes of global poverty by means of infrastructure projects. Sullivan is convinced that the installation of the Cat engine is another project that will effectively and noticeable improve living conditions: “We believe that access to safe and reliable energy is fundamental to disrupting the spiral of poverty.”
